The Enugu State Government has formalised a Subsidiary Loan Agreement for the Nigeria for Women Project, signaling a bold move to expand economic inclusion and create new career and business opportunities for women across the state.
Under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, the initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development. It aims to empower women through targeted financial support, capacity development, and entrepreneurship resources designed to strengthen livelihoods and scale women-led enterprises.
Commissioner for Gender Affairs, Ngozi Enih, highlighted the state’s proactive role in meeting its obligations, including the timely payment of the Counterpart Fund. She described the effort as a firm commitment to unlocking women’s economic potential. “We are empowering women to become job creators, not just job seekers,” she stated.
The program offers a comprehensive package for women in Enugu, including access to grants and affordable finance, training in financial literacy and business development, support through Women Affinity Groups, and improved access to export markets and industrial value chains.
Project Coordinator Blessing Ogbonna emphasised that the agreement sets the stage for deeper economic resilience and lasting impact. “This is about building long-term opportunities for women to thrive professionally and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy,” she said.
The Nigeria for Women Project, supported by the World Bank, is part of a broader strategy to increase women’s participation in local economies and strengthen gender equity in enterprise. The initiative positions Enugu as a key player in advancing scalable growth and inclusion across sectors.
