Enugu State has been declared Nigeria’s cleanest state, earning the N100 million Model Green State Award under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge spearheaded by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The recognition underscores Enugu’s proactive approach to environmental management and positions the state as an emerging hub for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and investors seeking a clean, business-friendly environment. In a country where poor sanitation and environmental neglect often hinder business operations, Enugu’s achievement highlights how strong environmental governance can translate into economic opportunity.
The First Lady explained that the Green Nigeria Challenge is designed to promote tree planting, sanitation, and community-led environmental sustainability. Beyond these efforts, she noted that the initiative is closely aligned with global climate action and could unlock opportunities for green enterprises, waste recycling, and other eco-friendly business ventures.
Enugu’s First Lady, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, who received the award on behalf of the state, dedicated the honour to the people. She reaffirmed Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to sustaining a clean and healthy environment that not only improves the quality of life but also supports the growth of enterprise and investment.
The RHI Green Nigeria Challenge extends beyond state-level recognition by also rewarding households and communities that demonstrate commitment to environmental practices. This grassroots participation encourages local ownership of climate-friendly initiatives while creating opportunities for jobs, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the green economy.
Observers say Enugu’s recognition has implications beyond prestige. For SMEs and investors, a cleaner environment reduces operational costs tied to poor sanitation and enhances the attractiveness of the state as a destination for business. It also strengthens Nigeria’s contribution to Africa’s growing focus on sustainable development, where environmental responsibility is increasingly seen as a driver of competitiveness in trade, tourism, and industry.
The award serves as a reminder that environmental stewardship is not just a policy goal but also an economic strategy. As states across Nigeria compete for investment and innovation, Enugu’s model could inspire others to link climate action with enterprise growth, job creation, and long-term resilience.
