The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has restated its commitment to cleansing Nigeria’s markets and protecting consumers through direct engagement with traders and market leaders.
Speaking at a market outreach held at the Dawanau International Grains Market in Kano, the FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO said the commission is stepping up efforts to promote fair and transparent trading practices nationwide.
He noted that the initiative is part of the commission’s broader campaign to engage those directly involved in economic activities—farmers, producers, sellers, buyers, and traders—to better understand challenges and ensure consumer rights are protected.
“Consumer protection doesn’t happen from a distance; it begins in the markets where traders power our economy, support families, and contribute to national development,” he stated.
He also linked the commission’s action to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on market reforms, livelihood protection, and inclusive economic growth. He highlighted concerns over illegal activities like rebagging and arbitrary price-fixing, stressing that such practices distort market integrity and exploit consumers.
During the engagement, the President of Dawanau Market Development Association welcomed the initiative, praising the FCCPC for taking action at the grassroots level. He assured that the traders would back government efforts to provide Nigerians with affordable and safe food.
He emphasized the traders’ commitment to fair pricing, product quality, and compliance with market regulations. “We will continue to sensitise our members on the importance of upholding these values to protect consumers and maintain public trust,” he added.
He also reaffirmed the market leadership’s willingness to work with authorities to discourage product adulteration and uphold consumer safety standards
