Federal Ministry of Agriculture Launches Performance Management System to Boost Sector Growth
Share

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has introduced a Performance Management System (PMS) to enhance service delivery, improve staff performance, and foster development in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. The initiative, aligned with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of the current administration, was unveiled on Monday in Abuja by Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.

Abdullahi emphasized that the PMS is designed to strengthen the ministry’s capacity by identifying knowledge and skills gaps among its workforce. He explained that the system would provide a framework for continuous staff and organizational development, ensuring the alignment of policy, planning, budgeting, and performance targets across institutional and individual levels.

“This initiative is not just about improving processes; it’s about transforming the public service to deliver effectively on its mandate. With the PMS, we are introducing clear and robust guidelines to enhance coordination, track progress, and improve government management,” Abdullahi said.

Permanent Secretary Temitope Fashedemi elaborated on the system’s mechanics, describing it as a structured approach that includes work planning, target setting, and support mechanisms for employees. The PMS will track employee performance and offer capacity-building opportunities through targeted training programs, ensuring staff can meet their responsibilities effectively.

The launch event also featured the inauguration of the Ministry’s Performance Management System Core Team, tasked with driving the implementation of the initiative. In a statement signed by Ogbuagu Charity Chika, Principal Information Officer, the ministry underscored the PMS’s potential to foster a culture of accountability and excellence within the public service.

The new system represents a strategic step towards achieving the ministry’s goals of food security and agricultural development, reflecting the government’s commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector through innovation and efficiency.
