The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has reported an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of over N30.7 million from test certification services in 2023. This significant sum adds to the N65.6 million generated between 2019 and 2022, demonstrating the ministry’s success in revenue generation.
Dr. Tiza Shaakaa, Deputy Director of the Department of Skills Development and Certification, revealed these figures in Abuja. He also highlighted that the department’s skills acquisition programs have trained 23,340 unemployed Nigerians in vocational and technical fields over the past three years, from 2020 to 2022.
In 2020, 3,192 individuals received training, followed by 8,903 in 2021, and an additional 11,245 in 2022. Among these trainees, 100 were provided with starter packs in 2020, 870 in 2021, and 2,200 in 2022, empowering them to embark on their professional journeys.
Shaakaa emphasized that these training efforts align with the ministry’s mandate of job creation, reaching communities across Nigeria in line with budget allocations and in collaboration with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).
At a workshop focused on strategic reporting on job creation and employment generation, Emmanuel Igbinosun, Director overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, acknowledged the pivotal role of the media as a strategic partner in achieving the ministry’s goals. He urged journalists to leverage the insights gained from the workshop to enhance their reporting on the ministry’s mandates and activities.
Igbinosun underscored the centrality of tackling unemployment in the government’s agenda, highlighting the need for comprehensive and knowledge-based reporting to effectively communicate the government’s efforts and policies in this critical area. He urged journalists to collaborate with the federal government in realizing its objectives for the betterment of the nation.
