The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and economic self-reliance as 100 young Nigerians graduated from the second cohort of the Skillnovation Training Programme in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
The four-week programme, which focused on vocational and digital skills, equipped participants with practical training in hair making, make-up artistry, confectionery, digital marketing and shoemaking, preparing them to launch income-generating ventures and contribute to local economies.
At the closing ceremony, certificates and financial support were presented to the graduates. Representing the Minister of Youth Development, Chief Obinna Nwaka, Director General of the Committee of Youth on Mobilisation and Sensitisation, said the initiative aligns with national efforts to build a self-reliant and entrepreneurial youth population.
He noted that Skillnovation complements other federal youth initiatives such as the Nigerian Youth Academy, Pi CNG Youth Initiative and the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund, all aimed at boosting innovation, productivity and economic participation among young people.
“The Skillnovation Programme reflects our commitment to equipping young Nigerians with skills that foster creativity, enterprise and sustainable livelihoods,” he said, while acknowledging the role of private sector partners like Dr Chiji Ojukwu of the African Project Development Centre in advancing government-led empowerment programmes.
Other speakers, including Hon. Kelechi Ugwumba and Ms Evelyn from the Volunteer Group, emphasised that investing in youth remains central to long-term national development.
The graduation marked the completion of a grassroots-focused training designed to combat unemployment and promote small-scale entrepreneurship. For the new graduates, the support extended through the programme serves as a springboard to self-sufficiency and participation in Nigeria’s evolving economy.
