The Ascent Club, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), and the University of Lagos Office of Career Development and Services, has launched the 2025 Ascent Career Clinic to equip students with practical career and enterprise skills for the evolving job market.
Themed “Career Readiness Skills for the Real World,” the programme brought together business leaders, HR professionals, and industry mentors to train over 100 students on employability, entrepreneurship, and workplace readiness.
Founder of The Ascent Club and visibility expert, Dr. Glory Edozien, said the initiative aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world professional expectations.
“The Ascent Club is all about equipping students to survive and thrive in the corporate and entrepreneurial world,” she said. “This is our first programme, and we hope it becomes an annual event. We mentored about 100 students and will select 20 of them for a six-month mentorship programme with top industry executives.”
She added that the goal is to create a steady pipeline of employable and business-minded young professionals through continuous mentorship and exposure to industry practices.
Areje Adegoke, Asset Manager and Business Opportunity Manager, Deep Water Non-Operated Ventures, SNEPCo, urged students to align academic knowledge with practical skills and to embrace mentorship opportunities.
“Students need to balance theory with practice and continuously develop both technical and soft skills to stay relevant,” she said.
Also speaking, Chiazagom Anisiebo, HR Business Partner at Moniepoint, encouraged students to sharpen their résumés, improve their interview techniques, and leverage platforms like LinkedIn to attract job and business opportunities.
The event featured a “Mentor’s Den” session where professionals from various sectors shared insights on leadership, communication, and career development.
Dr. Edozien announced that 20 students were selected for an intensive six-month executive mentorship designed to prepare them for corporate and SME success.
“This partnership with NNPC and SNEPCo reflects our shared commitment to building the next generation of skilled, employable, and enterprise-driven African professionals,” she said.
