No fewer than 500 young Nigerians have successfully completed a six-month solar energy training programme under the GreenWorks Africa initiative, designed to expand access to clean energy and unlock economic opportunities in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
The programme, implemented by EGO Foundation with support from Access Holdings, combined hands-on technical solar installation training with business and financial education, aiming to equip young entrepreneurs with the skills to run sustainable clean energy businesses.
Participants received training in solar installation, electrical systems maintenance, troubleshooting, and business fundamentals such as pricing strategies, customer acquisition, financial management, and operations. They were also given access to business bank accounts, working capital loans, and advisory services to help manage cash flow, price services competitively, and plan for growth.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Toluwase Olaniyan, Executive Director of EGO Foundation, highlighted the programme’s relevance in Nigeria’s growing solar market. “Persistent electricity shortages continue to affect households and businesses nationwide. This initiative equips young Nigerians with both the technical and business skills needed to turn solar energy into viable business opportunities,” he said.
Olaniyan added that the programme was designed to move beyond certification, with instructors bringing real-world business experience to the training. “Our graduates are not just certified; they are ready to operate businesses in competitive markets,” he said.
Access Holdings contributed SME banking products and business advisory services tailored specifically for GreenWorks graduates, recognising that technical expertise alone is insufficient without financial access.
Looking ahead, Olaniyan revealed plans to scale the programme, targeting 2,000 additional trainees in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, alongside the creation of an alumni network to support mentorship, collective purchasing, and business growth.
The GreenWorks Africa initiative represents a growing push to integrate clean energy solutions with entrepreneurship, empowering young Nigerians and strengthening MSMEs in the renewable energy sector.
