The Osaide for Girls in Science and Engineering Foundation has launched an empowerment initiative aimed at encouraging more female students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
During the outreach held at Baptist High School, Lagos, the Foundation engaged students in inspiring discussions on the prospects of STEM subjects, culminating in a competition that rewarded outstanding participants.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Afolabi Ogundero, also selected five students for a free dental check-up at his clinic, commending their enthusiasm and encouraging them to embrace continuous learning.
Founded six years ago by Dr. Patricia Opene-Odili, the Foundation annually awards university scholarships to six secondary school girls.
“Our mission is to pick young girls, especially those in public schools, mentor and encourage them to study science and engineering,” Dr. Opene-Odili said. “We believe these girls can become future innovators who will transform their communities through science and technology.”
Also speaking, Adebowale Adegbite, Head of Commercial at MI Finance Limited, highlighted the importance of financial literacy, saying, “Everyone, regardless of age or gender, needs financial knowledge to make informed decisions and manage resources effectively.”
An SS3 student, Mariam Akala, appreciated the Foundation’s efforts, saying the initiative motivated her to stay focused and believe in her dreams. “With commitment and hard work, one can achieve one’s goals,” she said.
The Foundation’s initiative aligns with ongoing national efforts to bridge the gender gap in STEM, empowering more girls with the education, mentorship, and confidence to thrive in science and engineering fields.
