Gombe State Attracts N26bn W’Bank Grant in Four Years For Economic Growth
Share

Gombe State has clinched a substantial N26 billion in grants over the past four years through its outstanding performance in the World Bank-backed States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) program. This impressive feat was announced by the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Muhammad Magaji, following the inaugural State Executive Council meeting.

These grants were attracted due to the successful implementation of SFTAS program reforms, spearheaded by Governor Inuwa Yahaya. These reforms have elevated the state’s transparency and accountability, paving the way for such financial support.

Mr. Magaji highlighted the substantial impact of this grant on the state, facilitating the execution of various projects ranging from vital infrastructure developments to enhanced healthcare services. These endeavors have greatly benefited the citizens of Gombe State.

“This grant, spanning from 2019 to 2023, has empowered Gombe State to embark on significant projects that directly enhance the lives of our people,” stated Mr. Magaji. He emphasized that this achievement underscores the state’s commitment to transparency and openness in governance.

Gombe State has not only embraced essential reforms but also ensured they are accessible to the public. Account books are readily available for scrutiny according to national accounting standards. Furthermore, annual accounts and budgets are consistently published, offering full transparency to all concerned parties.

Additionally, the state government has diligently adhered to SFTAS requirements, resulting in the prompt payment of contractors and clearance of outstanding arrears. These reforms have propelled Gombe State to the forefront of transparency, ranking it as the seventh most transparent state in Nigeria.

Looking ahead, the state government is focused on driving investments that will lead to the establishment of industries and the generation of employment opportunities for the youth in Gombe State.

The SFTAS program, with its dual components, is a pivotal initiative supporting Nigerian states in achieving key program objectives. This includes performance-based financing for state governments and technical assistance for states and select national-level institutions. The program also champions strategic reforms at the state level, advancing fiscal sustainability and open government commitments.
