Google has announced a new educational initiative that will give university students across six African countries free access to its premium AI Pro package for one year, in a move designed to strengthen innovation, digital learning, and entrepreneurship on the continent.

The initiative targets students aged 18 and above in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, and will run from October 7 to December 9, 2025, with access remaining valid for 12 months after activation.

According to details shared on the Google Gemini website, the offer allows students to apply artificial intelligence to research, creative projects, and business problem-solvingnhelping them build future-ready skills that can transform both academic and entrepreneurial outcomes.

“By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future,” said Alex Okosi, Google’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Okosi explained that the initiative reflects Google’s commitment to democratising access to technology and helping young Africans develop digital and entrepreneurial skills to compete globally.

The Google AI Pro plan comes with advanced features like guided learning, deep research, and a digital assistant that helps students organise notes, generate reports, and create content such as short videos. It also includes cloud storage to enhance collaboration and productivity.

Eligible students can verify their enrollment at gemini.google/students using their university email or school confirmation documents.

The initiative aligns with Google’s broader goal of supporting digital transformation and innovation-driven growth in Africa, especially among young entrepreneurs and student-led startups.

Building on previous efforts such as Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and Digital Skills for Africa, the company aims to help students turn classroom knowledge into scalable ventures and meaningful innovations that can boost small business growth and job creation across the continent.
