As part of its commitment to human capital development and sectoral growth, Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), in collaboration with the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN), has trained over 100 electricians and field technicians on electrical safety, renewable energy integration, and industry-compliant installation standards.
The one-day capacity-building workshop, themed “Electrical Safety and Best Practices in the Electricity Industry,” held in Lagos, featured interactive and hands-on sessions that focused on workplace safety, risk management, and innovations in energy distribution.
Participants were exposed to modern safety protocols, connection hazard prevention, and technical approaches to integrating alternative power sources skills that are increasingly vital as Nigeria’s energy landscape embraces renewable systems and smart power solutions.
Speaking at the event, the State Chairman of LECAN, Bada Waheed, commended Ikeja Electric for its continued collaboration with professional bodies to strengthen the capacity of electricians across the state.
“This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when industry leaders and professionals collaborate for sustainable growth,” Waheed said. “Our young electricians represent the future of Nigeria’s energy value chain, and programmes like this ensure they are skilled, informed, and safety-conscious.”
In his remarks, Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, Kingsley Okotie, highlighted the importance of partnerships that go beyond service delivery to focus on community empowerment and industry sustainability.
He noted that the training became necessary after the company identified knowledge gaps among technicians, particularly in safety practices and the integration of renewable energy solutions.
“We realised that empowering field electricians is key to building a safer and more efficient electricity network,” Okotie said. “Through this partnership, we’re investing in people who play a critical role in ensuring reliable, safe power connections within our communities.”
One of the beneficiaries, Makinde Adeyinka, described the programme as eye-opening and impactful, adding that it improved his understanding of safety compliance and installation standards.
“The training has changed the way I approach electrical work. I’ve learnt better methods for risk management and proper handling of renewable systems,” he said.
The initiative forms part of Ikeja Electric’s broader strategy to build capacity among key stakeholders in the energy ecosystem and support Nigeria’s transition toward safer, more sustainable power practices.
By bridging knowledge gaps among electricians and encouraging industry-wide collaboration, Ikeja Electric and LECAN continue to empower small-scale professionals who drive everyday power access reinforcing the link between SME growth, skills development, and national progress.
