The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has urged Micro, medium and small-scale enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria to adopt safety and health in the workplace.
The Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, said the workshop tagged “Strengthening the Capacity of Local MSMEs/Manufacturers to Produce High Quality PPEs and Healthcare-related Products” is aimed at strengthning local capacities of MSMEs in terms of occupational safety and health.
Saying: “This workshop basically is an initiative of the ILO and supported by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and other safety organisations on how safety can be deepen across the sector.”
Mojola said they have discovered through observation that a lot of MSMEs do not put safety first in the discharge of their activities and as a result, a lot of accidents and injuries occur.
The International Labor Organization (ILO) representative, Ms. Chineye Anekwe, the workshop was a COVID response project, supported by the United Nations fund and implemented jointly by ILO, UNIDO, and WHO.
According to her, the workshop’s goal was to increase the ability of regional MSMEs and manufacturers to adapt to changing competitive market conditions in order to ensure workplace safety and health and access business growth and financial services.
“The whole essence is to bring to light the consciousness of occupational safety and also enforce it in the mind of MSMEs and celebrate what they have learnt from the online training” she said.
