The Kwara State Government has launched the distribution of 100 motorcycles and 5,000 enzymes to agricultural extension agents and livestock farmers, aiming to boost food production and enhance access to nutritious food across the state. The initiative was unveiled at an event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under the Livestock Productivity and Resilient Support Project (L-PRES).
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, represented by Mamman Saba Jibril, Secretary to the State Government, emphasized the administration’s commitment to food and nutrition security. He noted that the initiative supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to transform the agricultural sector.
The event also featured the presentation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the Department of Livestock Services to enhance the mobility of its field officers. Governor Abdulrazaq highlighted various interventions, including the construction of boreholes and water troughs to address farmers-herders conflicts and the training of 700 extension agents and farmers on small ruminant production and feed processing.
The government has also launched a statewide mass anthrax vaccination campaign for livestock across all 16 local government areas of the state. Governor Abdulrazaq acknowledged the support from partners like the World Bank, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Islamic Development Bank, and African Development Bank in advancing the L-PRES initiative.
Oloruntoyosi Thomas, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, commended the governor for investing significantly in agriculture, emphasizing the essential role of extension agents in promoting food security. Olusoji Oyawoye, State Project Coordinator for L-PRES, stated that the intervention would extend the reach of extension workers to remote farmers, improving service delivery and promoting best practices to enhance productivity.
