In a landmark initiative to bolster economic development and youth empowerment in Lagos State, the United States African Development Foundation (USADF) and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) have signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This strategic partnership aims to enhance youth employment and entrepreneurship through expanded training and job placement opportunities.

The MOU signing ceremony took place at the LSETF office in Lagos, attended by key figures including USADF President/CEO Travis Adkins, LSETF’s Acting Executive Secretary Feyisayo Alayande, Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment Hon. Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, and other distinguished guests from both the government and private sectors.

This agreement builds on the success of the ongoing USADF-LSETF Employability Programme, which has trained over 10,500 young people across various sectors since its inception in 2019. Notably, 63 percent of the beneficiaries have been women. The program’s holistic approach—combining training, financial assistance, paid internships, and mentorship—has empowered participants to acquire new skills, start businesses, and secure jobs, significantly contributing to the economic growth of Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, LSETF’s Acting Executive Secretary, Feyisayo Alayande, emphasized the importance of this renewed collaboration. “Our initial partnership in 2019 marked a significant milestone in our journey towards addressing youth unemployment in Lagos State. Through the Employability Support Program, we have successfully trained over 10,500 young Lagosians in various skills, with over 7,000 of them securing employment or starting their own businesses. This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and the commitment of both LSETF and USADF to empowering our youth.”

USADF President/CEO Travis Adkins echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in deepening the foundation’s partnership with Lagos State. “This collaboration is historical because it extends the relationship between USADF and LSETF beyond the five years of the initial MoU. It is also a testament to our shared commitment to creating opportunities and building a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth.”

The new MOU focuses on expanding access to training and increasing job placement opportunities for Lagos youths. It also supports the development of innovative solutions to address the critical challenges faced by young people in the state.

Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. “Together, USADF, LSETF, and the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment are equipping young people with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive in today’s dynamic economy, thereby laying a strong foundation for the future of Lagos State.”

Adamu Garba, Executive Director of DDI, USADF’s implementing partner in Nigeria, praised the collaboration’s impact, noting that it has been instrumental in driving sustainable economic growth and nurturing the next generation of leaders.

Since the launch of the USADF-LSETF Employability Program, participants have received training across various key sectors, including Construction, Creative Industries, Education, Health & Beauty, Hospitality & Tourism, Renewable Energy, Services, and Technology.

This renewed partnership between USADF and LSETF represents a significant stride toward a more prosperous and empowered future for Lagos’ youth, paving the way for sustainable economic development and lasting opportunities for the next generation.
