NASS Proposes ‘Equity Trust Fund’ To Support Youth
Share

Amid Nigeria’s rising population and growing demand for food, stakeholders have emphasized the urgent need to increase agricultural productivity while ensuring equitable access and distribution. At the recent National Young People’s Dialogue on Inclusive Food Systems in Abuja, experts highlighted the role of youth in driving innovation, improving food systems, and securing the country’s agricultural future.

One speaker noted that achieving food security requires more than just higher output. It demands sustainable and equitable practices that address persistent challenges such as climate change, shrinking arable land, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss. He underscored that Nigeria’s young population—equipped with digital skills and a passion for sustainability—holds the key to overcoming these hurdles and revolutionizing the sector.

He expressed concern over the sector’s current state, marked by an ageing farmer demographic, limited access to modern technologies, and vast stretches of underutilized land. He stressed that revitalizing agriculture through enhanced productivity and stronger value chains is crucial to reducing unemployment, poverty, and food insecurity.

The dialogue, he said, aimed to offer concrete solutions to the structural barriers limiting youth participation in agriculture. By tapping into opportunities for entrepreneurship, value addition, and sector diversification, the discussion sought to lay the groundwork for a more resilient and youth-driven agricultural economy.

He argued that promoting youth engagement is vital not just for immediate job creation but for

Also speaking at the event, ActionAid Nigeria’s Food Systems Specialist introduced the Nigerian Youth in Agritech and Innovation Programme. He explained that the initiative is designed to generate sustainable employment and improve livelihoods for young people through active engagement in agriculture.

The program goals include pushing for youth-centred policies and fostering an environment where young Nigerians can thrive in Agritech and innovation, ultimately driving inclusive economic growth.
