NBRDA Unveils New Bio-Based Food Products to Boost Food Security
Share

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), through its Bioresources Development Centre (BIODEC) in Odi, Bayelsa State, has developed three innovative food products aimed at enhancing food security and improving livelihoods through biotechnology.

The newly introduced foods; Bio-Mix Cereal, Bio-Pap, and Bio-Custard, represent a major advancement in NBRDA’s effort to apply biotechnology to everyday nutrition, strengthen local food production, and promote healthier dietary choices among Nigerians.

Bio-Mix Cereal is a whole-grain meal made from yellow corn, millet, guinea corn, soya bean, date, and groundnut. It is rich in fibre, naturally sweetened with date, and free from artificial additives or refined sugar. According to the agency, the cereal promotes digestive health, supports cardiovascular wellness, aids weight management, and helps prevent chronic diseases.

Bio-Pap, produced from yellow corn, millet, and guinea corn, is fortified with cloves to deliver a nutritious, antioxidant-rich option with anti-inflammatory properties. Unlike traditional pap, it boasts an extended shelf life of six months to one year.

Bio-Custard, made from high-quality corn starch and naturally flavoured with vanilla, offers a smooth, wholesome custard experience with an appealing aroma and taste.

The products are currently undergoing quality control and sensory evaluation, with samples distributed to consumers for feedback on taste, texture, aroma, and overall acceptability.

The Director General of NBRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, said the development reflects the agency’s commitment to translating biotechnology research into practical solutions that address hunger, malnutrition, and economic challenges. He noted that the initiative aligns with the agency’s mandate to develop bio-based innovations that promote national food sufficiency and sustainable livelihoods.

The Coordinator of BIODEC Odi, Dr. Timi Wood, praised the leadership and support of the NBRDA Director General, describing them as instrumental to the successful processing of the new products. He added that the centre is evolving into a model for community-driven biotechnology, bridging the gap between scientific research and practical applications that benefit local populations.

BIODEC Odi is one of NBRDA’s 39 bioresources development centres across Nigeria dedicated to identifying and utilising underexplored biological resources for research, product innovation, and expertise development.
