The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has trained 33,692 youths, women, and people with disabilities in various job skills across Nigeria, helping them start small businesses and find employment. The training took place in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Employment Initiative.
Speaking at an event in Lagos, NDE Director-General Silas Agara, represented by Lagos State Coordinator Elizabeth Omatsola, explained that the program is designed to reduce unemployment by equipping people with practical skills, providing financial support, and connecting them to job opportunities. The initiative focuses on skill development, mentorship, and business support, helping beneficiaries succeed in today’s work environment.
Omatsola highlighted that the program also provides startup loans, business tools, and access to financial resources to help new entrepreneurs grow. By partnering with local businesses, the NDE aims to create more job opportunities, encourage innovation, and contribute to economic development. She stressed that the goal is not just self-employment but also the ability for beneficiaries to create jobs for others.
She advised participants to make good use of the tools provided and not sell them. Instead, she urged them to work hard and remain committed to their businesses. “This initiative is a stepping stone towards financial independence. If you remain dedicated, you can become employers of labor and contribute to Nigeria’s economy,” she said.
Some of the beneficiaries, including Raji Idris Oluwatoyin and Razak Yusuff Idowu, expressed gratitude for the training and the tools provided. They pledged to use the opportunity wisely by building their businesses and making a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy.
The NDE’s efforts align with six out of the eight priority areas of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, showing a strong commitment to job creation and economic empowerment. As more Nigerians gain valuable skills and financial support, the initiative is expected to reduce unemployment and boost small businesses nationwide.
