The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), marking another milestone in the country’s junior secondary education system.
A total of 179,201 students registered and participated in the examination, which was conducted across the country in 12 core and elective subjects. The exams began on May 12 and concluded on May 23, 2025.
The results were officially approved during the 2025 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. The committee comprises key stakeholders in the education sector, including NECO management and secondary school principals drawn from all geopolitical zones. The meeting served to evaluate the conduct of the exams, review performance trends, and authorize the release of results.
Chairperson of the Award Committee, Folake David, who also serves as the Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, commended NECO for a seamless and transparent examination process. She noted that the council had maintained a high standard of administration from registration to marking and result processing.
“We are pleased with the integrity of the process and the efficiency with which NECO has delivered this year’s BECE. It is encouraging to see continuous improvements in exam coordination and result turnaround time,” she stated.
In addition to releasing the results, the committee also approved the schedule for the 2025 BECE resit examinations. These makeup exams are designed for candidates who did not meet the minimum required performance in key subjects.
According to the approved timetable, resit exams will hold on July 23 and 24, 2025. Mathematics is scheduled for the first day, while English Studies will be written on the second day. Only students who failed or had issues in these two subjects will be eligible to sit for the resits.
NECO encouraged school administrators and state education boards to promptly inform affected students and ensure they are adequately prepared for the resit dates. All resit candidates are expected to write the exams under the same standardized conditions to maintain the integrity of the BECE system.
The council also advised candidates who sat for the main examination to check their results via the official NECO result-checking portal using their registration details. Students, parents, and schools were urged to report any anomalies or technical issues through appropriate channels for prompt resolution.
With the successful release of the 2025 BECE results, NECO reaffirmed its commitment to upholding academic excellence, expanding access to credible assessment systems, and ensuring that junior secondary school students transition smoothly to the next phase of their education.
