New Horizons Nigeria, a leading ICT training institute, has launched a 90-day empowerment initiative aimed at taking Almajiri youths off the streets and equipping them with practical, income-generating technical skills.
The programme, tagged Almajiris-to-Tech, combines hands-on training in computer and electronics repairs with structured mindset re-orientation. It forms part of New Horizons’ Corporate Social Responsibility, and aims to address the Almajiri challenge through sustainable education, empowerment, and entrepreneurship.
Managing Director Tim Akano explained that the continued presence of Almajiri children on the streets reflects broader societal neglect rather than individual failure. “Every person has inherent value and dignity and deserves the opportunity to pursue productivity and self-reliance,” he said. Akano added that practical skill-building, alongside non-kinetic interventions like education and re-orientation, is critical to delivering lasting solutions.
Scheduled to commence on 19 January 2026 at the New Horizons Training Centre in Abuja, the programme will train participants in repairing laptops, desktops, mobile phones, projectors, televisions, radios, fans, inverter batteries, and other electronic devices. Beneficiaries will also learn environmentally sustainable practices, such as repurposing electronic waste to build uninterruptible power supply systems and rechargeable fans.
The first week focuses on mindset re-orientation, led by a psychologist and an elite Imam, delivered in Hausa. Sessions will cover discipline, confidence, good citizenship, patriotism, and responsibility to help participants transition away from street begging and violence.
The first batch has reserved slots for key empowerment stakeholders, including ten slots for the People Expertise and Excellence Foundation and another ten for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, a long-standing youth empowerment advocate.
Graduates will receive post-training support, including market placement, access to workspace, and recognition as New Horizons Computer Technicians. The top-performing participant will receive full funding and a complete set of business tools to start an independent venture.
New Horizons is committing N50m to the initiative, covering feeding, logistics, training materials, branded T-shirts, and tools. A dedicated technical portal will also provide participant details to facilitate public access to their services.
The organisation encouraged Nigerians and international partners to support the programme through www.almajiritotech.com, describing it as a patriotic effort to transform youths into skilled, employable, and socially responsible citizens. Graduates will be available from April 2026 to provide nationwide repair services for mobile phones, laptops, desktops, and other electronic devices.
