The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has trained 171 drivers and dispatch riders from its member companies on sustainable driving practices, vehicle maintenance, and fuel efficiency. The training, conducted in partnership with the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), took place at the Insurers House in Victoria Island, Lagos, under the theme “Sustainable Eco-Driving: Balancing the Environment, Equity, and Economy.”
According to a statement by NIA’s Head of Corporate Communications and Brand Management, Ajoke Adeyemi, the annual training reflects the association’s commitment to enhancing road safety, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency within the transportation sector.
NIA’s Head of Training, Ms. Rose Okonkwo, emphasized that eco-driving is essential in reducing road accidents and improving driving culture. She noted that beyond improving fuel efficiency, the training also equips drivers with skills to extend vehicle lifespan, minimize maintenance costs, and adopt safer driving habits.
“The goal is not just to enhance driving techniques but also to create a mindset shift that prioritizes responsible and law-abiding road use,” Okonkwo said.
LASDRI General Manager, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, highlighted the importance of such workshops in developing safer roads. She explained that LASDRI partnered with NIA to ensure professional drivers in the insurance industry gain a deeper understanding of road safety, traffic regulations, and eco-friendly driving techniques.
“Through this training, we hope to instill a culture of responsibility among drivers and dispatch riders. Changing their mindset towards better driving practices will not only benefit their companies but also contribute to safer roads for all Nigerians,” she said.
Participants engaged in practical driving exercises, eye tests, and computerized board assessments conducted by LASDRI. At the end of the session, they were awarded certificates of attendance along with LASDRI re-certification cards, acknowledging their improved competency in road safety and sustainable driving.
Tiamiyu encouraged corporate organizations to invest in similar training programs for their drivers, stressing that continuous education is key to reducing road accidents, enhancing productivity, and promoting environmental sustainability.
With this initiative, the NIA continues to play a pivotal role in fostering responsible driving habits, ensuring safer roads, and promoting sustainability within Nigeria’s transport sector.
