The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has launched a Space-Tech Hackathon to empower young Nigerians in the Northeast region, focusing on grassroots innovation in satellite technology.
The event, themed “Building Grassroots Innovation in Satellite Technology,” will take place from February 24 to 28 in Yola, Adamawa State, and marks the first in a series of four regional hackathons. The initiative targets university students, local innovators, and young professionals across six states—Borno, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Adamawa.
Participants will receive training in Very Small Aperture Terminal (V-SAT) technology and work on real-world community challenges using space technology. The program will explore applications of NIGCOMSAT’s communication satellites, the National Space Research and Development Agency’s (NASRDA) satellites, and emerging technologies to drive problem-solving and innovation.
According to Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, managing director of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, winning teams from the hackathon will progress into the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme 2025 cohort, where they will refine their solutions and receive mentorship to bring their ideas to market.
The Adamawa State Government is co-hosting the event in collaboration with NIGCOMSAT Ltd, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering technological growth. The program is designed to raise awareness about satellite technology’s role in solving societal problems, encourage innovation, and contribute to economic development.
Beyond technical training, the initiative aims to reduce youth unemployment by equipping participants with in-demand skills, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting engagement in Nigeria’s growing digital economy. As the space technology sector expands, initiatives like this could open doors for young Africans to build sustainable careers in tech-driven industries.
NIGCOMSAT, a government-owned entity under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, plays a crucial role in managing Nigeria’s communication satellites. It provides telecommunications, broadcasting, broadband, and navigation services while supporting national security, education, and e-governance. Through programs like this hackathon, NIGCOMSAT seeks to accelerate sectoral growth and strengthen Africa’s position in the global space technology landscape.
