The Federal Government has begun distributing an additional ten trucks of 50kg rice to each state, sold at designated centers for N40,000 per bag, to alleviate poverty and the high cost of living.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced this initiative while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. This measure follows FEC’s statement that the demands of youth protesters are being addressed, eliminating the need for protests.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized his commitment to addressing the grievances of the youth, stating, “The President has listened to the voices of all those who are planning this protest. And the message is that there is no need for it.”
Idris noted that the rice distribution is part of the government’s efforts to ensure food availability. “This rice has been taken to various centers across all the states of the federation and is being sold at N40,000 per bag. About ten trucks have been made available to each state,” he said.
He acknowledged that while the supplies may not be sufficient, they are a necessary first step, with more interventions planned. “These are interim measures because there is so much investment going into the agricultural sector,” he added.
Idris also highlighted other government efforts, including the disbursement of student loans and employment initiatives. “The federal government has begun the disbursement of student loans with provisions for over two million students,” he said. Additionally, the government is working to employ three million youths through the MTT program and is advancing the CNG initiative to reduce transportation costs.
“These measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to addressing economic challenges and improving living conditions for Nigerians,” Idris concluded.
