Nigeria has introduced “Service-Wise GPT,” an AI-powered tool designed to enhance public service efficiency. Unveiled at the Global Government Summit, the AI assistant aims to streamline access to government information, automate policy drafting, and improve administrative workflows.
Early trials show a 73% improvement in time efficiency and a 90% user satisfaction rate. Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Nigeria’s Head of Civil Service, stated that the AI system will transform how government employees interact with regulations and policies, improving compliance and decision-making across ministries.
The launch aligns with Nigeria’s broader push for AI adoption under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. In 2024, the government, in partnership with Google, introduced a ₦100 million fund to support AI-powered startups, accelerating innovation in Nigeria’s tech sector.
Nigeria’s AI adoption reflects a wider African trend, as the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy promotes responsible AI development and regional cooperation. However, bureaucratic inefficiencies remain a challenge in Nigeria’s public sector. “Service-Wise GPT” aims to address this by automating routine tasks like memo creation and policy analysis.
Experts, including the Brookings Institution, stress the importance of AI policies that ensure privacy, security, and transparency. Addressing these concerns will be key as Nigeria expands its AI-driven transformation.
Beyond governance, Nigeria is investing in AI research and startups. In 2023, the government engaged Nigerian-born AI scientists to shape its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. These efforts position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s AI evolution.
With “Service-Wise GPT,” Nigeria is modernizing its public service while laying the groundwork for AI adoption in other key sectors. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for other African nations seeking to leverage AI for governance and service delivery.
