Share

The Nigerian Senate has instructed its Committee on Finance to suspend further work on the proposed tax bill pending the outcome of a meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). This announcement was made by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, during today’s plenary session.

A special committee has been formed to address the contentious areas of the proposed legislation, with the high-level meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, December 5th, 2024.

Contentious Issues and Stakeholder Concerns

The tax bill has been the subject of heated debates among lawmakers and stakeholders in recent days. Disagreements over key provisions have prompted the Senate to seek further consultation to ensure the legislation aligns with national priorities and addresses stakeholder concerns.

Special Committee Members

The Senate has constituted a special committee comprising the following members:

  1. Rabiu Abba Moro – Chairman
  2. Tahir Monguno
  3. Aliero Adamu
  4. Kalu Orji
  5. Dickson Seriake
  6. Zam Titus
  7. Yahaya Abdullahi
  8. Adeola Solomon
  9. Sani Musa
  10. Abiru Mukhail
  11. Entire Senate Leadership

Next Steps

To harmonize their positions, the Senate plans to convene a special meeting at the National Assembly, chaired by the Minority Leader. The meeting will provide a platform for lawmakers to address disagreements and fine-tune the bill to ensure it serves national interests while meeting stakeholder expectations.

The outcome of these deliberations will determine the next steps for the tax bill, which is critical to Nigeria’s fiscal policy and economic growth.
