The Federal Government has launched a digital empowerment scheme to provide 8,000 Nigerian teachers with subsidized devices and free internet access, aimed at improving teaching quality and professional development.
Unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Education, the initiative will run from December 2025 to July 2026 with support from the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE).
According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the initiative aligns with the National Digital Learning Policy (NDLP) and reflects the government’s drive to build a digitally skilled teaching workforce.
“Giving teachers devices without data is counterproductive. This scheme ensures access to learning tools at no cost,” Alausa said.
Under the program, teachers will receive subsidized mobile devices preloaded with digital learning tools and free access to the government’s eLearn platform, made possible through zero-rated data from partner telecom companies.
Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Dr. Ronke Soyombo, described the move as a step toward bridging the digital divide in education and improving learning outcomes nationwide.
She noted that digital inclusion is key to strengthening teacher capacity and fostering innovation in the classroom.
Alausa also inaugurated the Ministerial Implementation Committee on the Education Public–Private Partnership (ePPP) for Zero Data and Devices, which will oversee the pilot phase and prepare a report to guide nationwide rollout by July 2026.
