The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) has concluded a two-day training programme for rice farmers in Kogi State to enhance their knowledge of modern rice processing techniques and improve livelihoods.
Held at the ASCO Rice Processing Centre, Ajaokuta, the training focused on improving rice quality, nutritional value, and market competitiveness.
Speaking during a practical session, Mr. Inakwu Joseph, Principal Agric Officer, Department of Extension Services, FMAFS, Abuja, said the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to promote value addition in agriculture and make youth more interested in agribusiness beyond production.
“The aim is to ensure farmers process rice that meets international standards, with higher quality and better market value,” Joseph said, adding that participants were trained both theoretically and practically.
Mrs. Adejoke Subair, Kogi State Coordinator of FMAFS, explained that the training would enhance food security by improving the availability, affordability, and sustainability of quality rice.
Resource person Engr. Gabriel Ojima Salifu noted that 20 lead rice processors were trained to cascade the knowledge to other farmers, using modern methods such as industrial steaming, bed drying, and improved parboiling techniques.
Beneficiaries, including Mrs. Blessing Samuel and Mrs. Pauline Agada, commended the Federal Government and the Kogi State Government for the initiative, saying it would improve both the quality and value of locally processed rice.
