The National Information Technology Development Agency says it is taking part in the 13th regular meeting of the National Council on communication, innovation, and digital economy in Jos, Plateau State, with the focus placed on how digital policy can better support small businesses across Nigeria. The agency shared the update on its official X handle.
The meeting, themed accelerating inclusive digital transformation: bridging the gaps and fostering sustainable growth through innovation, brings government agencies, policymakers, innovators and technology leaders together to examine the digital barriers slowing down micro, small and medium enterprises. Across Nigeria, limited broadband access, the high cost of data, digital illiteracy and infrastructure gaps continue to stand in the way of MSMEs adopting digital tools that can improve their operations. Stakeholders at the meeting are reviewing these challenges and exploring fresh policy interventions that can clear the obstacles.
The council is assessing national initiatives currently in place and considering new strategies to expand digital inclusion and strengthen innovation hubs, especially in underserved regions. Attention is also placed on deepening digital skills and building a more friendly business environment for small enterprises looking to scale through technology. Panel sessions and policy discussions are expected to align national efforts towards boosting business competitiveness, expanding access to digital markets, and ensuring SMEs benefit from the opportunities emerging in the digital economy.
NITDA’s participation reinforces the ongoing push for a more inclusive digital ecosystem where small businesses can leverage technology to increase productivity, reach more customers and operate with greater efficiency. This signals a growing prioritisation of SME-focused digital policies that could reshape how entrepreneurs across the country use technology to accelerate growth.
