In a bid to make women and youths financially independent, the Ogun State government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has trained over 300 women in various vocational skills. On Tuesday, the state government distributed sewing machines, locally made ovens, pedicure boxes, stoning machines, industrial burners, and more to the trained women.
The training covered skills such as fashion designing, catering, cosmetology, and beauty care. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, disclosed this during the graduation and distribution ceremony at the Women Development Centre, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
Adeleye highlighted that these vocational skills are essential for personal advancement and the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). She stated, “The trainees have been trained in competitive skills that thrive in society, and these include Fashion Designing, Catering, Hairdressing, Cosmetology, and Beauty care. The importance of vocational training cannot be overemphasized, serving as an alternative means of livelihood for many people.”
She noted that the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration has provided unwavering support and empowered women economically through initiatives like ‘Oko’wo Dapo’. Adeleye urged the graduates to continually seek knowledge and improve their skills with the latest trends and innovations in their fields.
“I want you to make adequate use of the knowledge and skills acquired. It is important to embrace entrepreneurship with confidence and creativity in developing solutions that can turn needs into opportunities,” she said.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Ayotunde Lawal, emphasized the government’s determination to improve the livelihoods of youths and women through vocational training. Lawal encouraged the graduates to make judicious use of the opportunities to enhance their career prospects, foster entrepreneurship, and improve productivity, thereby reducing dependency on white-collar jobs.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole, explained that the program aims to equip trainees with practical skills essential for the growth of the local economy. “Provision of quality vocational training for unemployed youths will make them self-reliant, confident, and capable of contributing positively to society,” Adewole stated.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Barakat Adeniyi expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity to be trained and supported with working tools. She added that they now feel empowered to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy.
The government also noted that over 20,000 people have benefited from its poverty and unemployment alleviation schemes so far, underscoring its commitment to economic empowerment and development in the state.
