The Oyo State Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening food security by training 1,950 farmers across its 33 local government areas. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, aligns with the government’s broader goal of fostering a resilient and productive agricultural sector.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, underscored the importance of equipping farmers with modern techniques to enhance productivity and sustainability. Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Abosede Owoeye, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in the agricultural sector, acknowledging the crucial role farmers play in ensuring food security and economic growth.
The training program covered various specialized areas, ensuring that farmers across different agricultural sectors benefited. A total of 660 farmers received training on pasture establishment, management, conservation, and artificial insemination techniques to improve livestock farming. Additionally, 300 farmers were trained in climate-smart agriculture, focusing on high-value crop production and sustainable weed management strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on farming.
To further diversify the agricultural sector, 140 young farmers participated in a training on modern beekeeping practices, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to establish and manage beekeeping enterprises. Another 100 farmers were trained in shea butter production techniques, while 90 participants learned improved methods for processing locust beans, an important local food ingredient. In a bid to promote alternative sources of income and encourage agribusiness ventures, 660 youths, women, and retirees were trained in mushroom cultivation across all zones of the state.
Olaleye urged participants to maximize the opportunity, emphasizing that the state government had engaged industry experts and resource persons to ensure a comprehensive and impactful learning experience. He noted that the training program was part of the Seyi Makinde-led administration’s broader strategy to empower farmers, increase food production, and drive economic development through agriculture.
Beyond training, the Oyo State Government has pledged continuous support for farmers by providing access to improved seedlings, modern farming equipment, and financial assistance where necessary. The administration also plans to establish a monitoring system to track the progress of beneficiaries and ensure they apply the knowledge gained effectively.
As food security remains a top priority, the government is looking to expand similar training programs in the future, encouraging more participation from youths and women to drive innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector. The initiative is expected to not only boost food production within the state but also create employment opportunities and strengthen local agribusinesses.
By investing in human capital development within the agricultural sector, Oyo State is positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s drive for self-sufficiency in food production, ensuring that farmers have the skills, knowledge, and resources to thrive in an evolving agricultural landscape.
