Sanwo-Olu Disburses ₦460m to 1,000 Lagos Residents Under Eko Cares Programme
Share

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has empowered 1,000 residents with ₦460 million under the Eko Cares Financial Assistance Programme, a flagship initiative designed to ease economic hardship and promote self-reliance among vulnerable citizens.

The cheques were presented to beneficiaries during an event organised by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement in Agidingbi, Lagos. Each beneficiary received between ₦300,000 and ₦1.5 million to support small businesses, healthcare, education, rent, and persons with disabilities.

Represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged recipients to make effective use of the funds to improve their livelihoods. He said the initiative reflects the government’s dedication to delivering inclusive governance that provides hope and opportunity to those most affected by current economic realities.

“The essence of governance is to provide comfort, hope, and opportunities for those in need,” the governor said. “This programme is not just financial aid, it is a seed of hope. Let it ignite your next breakthrough, bolster your business, or bring peace to your home. The government can open doors, but it is your determination that keeps them open.”

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing them as essential steps toward building a stronger, more equitable Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr Afolabi Tajudeen, said the programme embodies the state’s core values of compassion, equity, and empowerment. He noted that since its inception in 2020, Eko Cares has served as a beacon of hope for thousands of residents across the state, reaffirming the government’s commitment that no Lagosian will be left behind.

Tajudeen also highlighted other citizen-focused programmes, such as the Civic Education and Sensitisation Programme in schools and the Citizens Gate Mobile App, which aim to strengthen public engagement and transparency.

Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government for its continuous support, pledging to use the funds responsibly to improve their welfare and communities.

Launched in 2020, the Eko Cares Financial Aid Programme provides targeted support for healthcare, small-scale businesses, education, and housing as part of Lagos State’s broader efforts to reduce poverty and promote inclusive, sustainable growth.
