The SMEDAN office in Oyo State recently conducted an insightful one-day session at the University of Ibadan. The majority of participants, who were final-year Food Technology students, were urged to explore business opportunities in the food industry leveraging their field of study.

Led by the State Manager, Mrs. lyabo Ojogbede, the session also featured a presentation on “Funding Options for Small Scale Food Businesses and Grant Opportunities.” This enlightened the students about various avenues to secure funding for their business ventures.

This annual seminar series, organized in collaboration with the University of Ibadan, serves as a valuable platform to equip students with practical knowledge about venturing into the food industry.

For those considering launching a successful food business, here are the essential steps:

  1. Begin with comprehensive market research to understand demand and assess competition in your chosen area.
  2. Develop a robust business plan outlining your concept, target audience, menu, pricing, and effective marketing strategies.
  3. Obtain the necessary permits and licenses, such as health department approvals and food handling certifications, in compliance with local regulations.
  4. Seek out an optimal location, factoring in considerations like foot traffic, accessibility, and affordability.
  5. Invest in quality ingredients, equipment, and competent staff. Prioritize delivering exceptional customer service to cultivate a loyal customer base and ensure the sustained success of your food business.
