The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is preparing to launch a revised Nigerian National Standardisation Strategy (NNSS), designed to enhance standards for new goods and services, improve consumer protection, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in international trade.
Engr. Ahmed Bukar, SON’s director of standards development, announced the launch during a workshop for the Commerce and Industry Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (CICAN) in Abuja. Bukar described the NNSS as a four-year plan to support local producers and ensure Nigerian products meet global standards.
“This strategy outlines our goals for the next four years to align with Nigerian needs,” Bukar said, emphasizing the importance of robust standards for both consumer protection and global trade competitiveness. “Standards are essential for facilitating trade.”
To achieve these goals, SON has formed 191 technical committees with experts from various fields to develop and review standards, ensuring compliance with both local and international requirements.
Additionally, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, SON’s director-general, noted recent achievements including a second-place ranking in the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) 2024 Half Year Transparency and Efficiency Compliance Report. The report assessed 20 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) on service delivery transparency, with SON scoring 78.2 percent.
Dr. Okeke attributed this success to SON’s dedication to improving service delivery through digital innovation and enhanced regulatory frameworks.
