Mr. Jean Bakole, UNIDO Regional Director for West and Central Africa, emphasized the crucial role of supporting Nigerian manufacturers and MSMEs to drive economic growth and reduce reliance on imports. Speaking at MANEXPO2023 in Lagos, Bakole called for sustained government policies, infrastructure, and continued support for local industries.
Bakole stressed the need to back local manufacturers and startups engaged in producing made-in-Nigeria goods. He highlighted the detrimental effects of over-reliance on imported products, including weakening the currency, job loss, and shrinking GDP. Encouraging the production and patronage of local products, he asserted, leads to economic stability, advancement, and increased employment opportunities.
Given the global economic climate, Bakole urged Nigerians to prioritize locally made goods, underscoring the positive impact on the country’s economy. He emphasized that government intervention in developing local industries would bolster business growth, resulting in a surge of benefits, including higher GDP, job creation, and reduced production costs.
Bakole concluded by emphasizing the necessity for sustained government support through policies, essential infrastructure, and ongoing assistance to MAN and its members.
