n celebration of World Cleanup Day 2024, the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), in partnership with UNICEF, has announced the launch of the #GreenRisingProject, aimed at transforming waste management while empowering youth in Nigeria.
WAPAN mobilized over 1,000 young people across Lagos, Abuja, and Kano for a week-long campaign focused on waste collection, recovery, and recycling. This initiative goes beyond cleaning up streets, as it integrates youth into the formal waste economy, providing them with training and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
“Thi isn’t just about cleaning up. It’s about empowering the youth and transforming the waste management sector,” WAPAN stated. “We are addressing critical issues like child labor in waste picking by offering education and protection for affected children. Our use of cutting-edge technology to track waste collection and secure benefits for beneficiaries is revolutionizing Nigeria’s waste management sector.”
WAPAN emphasized that the project is paving the way for the future of waste management in Nigeria, showcasing new and innovative technologies never seen before in the country. “We are driving real change and invite everyone to join us in making a lasting impact across the nation,” WAPAN added.
The #GreenRisingProject has highlighted Nigeria’s potential in the global challenge of plastic waste management, especially in combating land and marine waste. WAPAN’s efforts demonstrate the resilience and talent of Nigeria’s waste pickers, positioning them as key players in the fight against plastic pollution.
