WhatsApp Tests Usernames to Replace Phone Numbers in Major Shift Toward Privacy and Identity Control
Share

WhatsApp’s move toward username-based identification marks a significant step in reshaping how people interact on the platform, moving away from its long-standing reliance on phone numbers. Currently in beta testing, this feature introduces a new “Username” field intended to give users greater control over their privacy, especially in large group settings and business communications where exposing personal numbers can be uncomfortable or intrusive.

The introduction of usernames would allow individuals to participate in conversations and join communities without revealing their phone numbers. This adjustment mirrors systems used on platforms like Telegram and Instagram, signalling WhatsApp’s transition into a more flexible, identity-driven communication environment. Reports also suggest that verification tools may be added to prevent impersonation and safeguard against misuse, ensuring that usernames remain credible and protected.

If adopted globally, this would represent one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy upgrades to date. It has the potential to redefine how identity is shared, creating safer interaction in public groups, interest communities and business chats. For small enterprises and brands using WhatsApp Business, usernames could support more professional engagement while protecting personal contact information.

This update fits into WhatsApp’s broader evolution from a simple messaging platform into a multifunctional space for communication, commerce and community building. While still under testing with no official launch date yet announced, it is clear that WhatsApp is preparing for a future where users decide how they are identified, by a handle, not a number.
