The World Forum for Africa has partnered with UN Women and the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria to advance financial inclusion among women, a move aimed at breaking socio-economic barriers and boosting economic growth.
WOFA said in a statement that the initiative was unveiled during the Aso Accord Gender Workshop.
It was highlighted at the ShesIncluded Gender Inclusion Conference 2024 in Abuja, where over 300 women received skills and resources to enhance their financial prospects.
“Our collaboration with UN Women is a critical step toward empowering women across Nigeria,” said the co-founder of WOFA, Abi Haruna. “We are committed to creating sustainable pathways for women’s economic participation and growth.”
Financial inclusion in Nigeria has improved, with formal inclusion rising from 56 per cent in 2020 to 64 per cent in 2023, according to the EFInA Access to Finance survey.
Despite this progress, 26 per cent of adults remain financially excluded, primarily in rural areas and northern regions, where exclusion rates are as high as 47 per cent 14.
The Technical Adviser for Financial Inclusion at the Office of the Vice President, Dr Nurudeen Zauro, said the initiative goes beyond financial inclusion, addressing issues such as maternal health, girl-child education, and gender-based violence.
“This event examines their nexus with economic and financial inclusion,” he added.
WOFA said the programme aligned with Nigeria’s vision of achieving a $1tn economy by ensuring women have access to essential financial services and economic opportunities.
The partnership marks a significant step in Nigeria’s drive toward women’s economic empowerment and sustainable development.
