The World Bank has appointed Mathew Verghis as its new Country Director for Nigeria, effective July 1, 2025. He succeeds Dr. Ndiame Diop, who has taken up a new position within the institution.
In a statement released by the World Bank, Verghis was described as an Indian national with over two decades of experience in economic policy and development. He joined the World Bank in 1999 and has since held senior leadership roles across Africa, East Asia, Europe, and Central Asia. Until his appointment, he served as the Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in the South Asia Region, based in Washington, D.C.
Verghis expressed enthusiasm about his new role, noting the significance of the current moment in Nigeria’s development journey. “I am honored to take on this role and to work alongside the government and people of Nigeria,” he said. “There is real potential for transformative growth that can improve lives, create jobs, and expand opportunities for all. I’m also excited to experience firsthand the rich culture and incredible energy of Nigeria.”
As Country Director, Verghis will lead the World Bank’s efforts in Nigeria, overseeing its development portfolio and driving initiatives focused on economic growth, poverty reduction, and resilience building. His leadership will also involve strengthening partnerships with government institutions, civil society, and other development stakeholders to support Nigeria’s long-term goals.
Verghis holds a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame in the United States and is known for his research and writings on topics including economic growth, fiscal policy, labor markets, and poverty alleviation.
