The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has extended a N200 million support package to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Bayelsa State, in a bid to alleviate the current socio-economic challenges faced by businesses in the state.
Presenting a cheque to Governor Douye Diri at the Government House in Yenagoa, Joyce Oboro, leader of the UNDP team, highlighted the objectives of the initiative, which is co-sponsored by the European Union. She emphasized the importance of empowering medium and small businesses across various sectors through financial support and capacity building, with a focus on adopting a cluster-based approach to achieve set objectives.
Oboro expressed confidence that the project would stimulate economic growth and enhance the standard of living for Bayelsans, calling on well-meaning groups and individuals to support the initiative.
In response, Governor Douye Diri welcomed the partnership between the government and the UNDP to develop MSMEs in the state. He commended the organization for its support during the 2022 flood crisis, describing UNDP as a true friend of Bayelsa State.
Diri highlighted the efforts of his administration in developing and supporting MSMEs, including training initiatives and monthly grants of N200,000 to 420 small business owners across the 105 wards in the state. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to partnering with UNDP to ensure the success of the project and improve the lives of Bayelsans.
The governor underscored the importance of capacity building, training, and mentorship in nurturing small businesses, emphasizing the need to prioritize human capital development alongside infrastructure development.
Diri expressed optimism that the partnership with UNDP would bring relief to the people of Bayelsa State, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to fostering shared prosperity and supporting local entrepreneurs.
